Ten pattern systems

Truchet tiles place one of two quarter-arc or diagonal tiles in every cell. Each cell's choice is random, and the arcs join up into long maze-like paths. Triangles split each square along a random diagonal and colour the halves. Stripes and checks take an angle, isometric cubes shade three faces, and hexagons, dots, waves and zigzags complete the set.

Cell size is a fraction of the shorter side, so a pattern keeps its proportions from an avatar to a 4K background. Patterns are vector, which keeps lines crisp in SVG and at any raster size.

Reproducible by design

Every image comes from a seed. The address bar holds the generator, the seed, the size and only the settings you changed, so the link redraws the exact same picture on any device. That is useful for picking up where you left off, sending someone a design, or regenerating a file at a bigger size later. See how it works.

Questions

What is a Truchet pattern?

A pattern made from one square tile placed in different rotations. With quarter-circle arcs, random rotations join into continuous curving paths.

Can I make a pattern background for a website?

Yes. Download SVG for the sharpest result, or PNG at your hero size. The pattern fills the whole canvas at the size you choose.

How do I get bigger or smaller tiles?

Change Cells across. Fewer cells means bigger tiles. Line weight sets stroke thickness for line-based patterns.

Is the same pattern reproducible?

Yes. The tile choices come from the seed in reading order, so the same seed and settings always lay the same tiles.
